New evidenced based medicine is perhaps closing in the age-old question of what is insomnia, what may the source of it’s causes and new non-drug approaches in treating it effectively.

In a recent study by researchers Barbara Hammer, PhD, Agatha P. Colbert, MD and others, entitled: “A Pilot Study of Z-‐Score Sensorimotor & Individualized Neurofeedback”, it was found that hyper-arousal within the sensory motor cortex may hold clues to insomnia as being less of a psychological condition and more of the central nervous system’s equivalent of an on-going neurological power surge.

A recent study performed at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology has shown a strong correlation between long term sleep deprivation and fibromyalgia. For those living in larger cities and surrounding suburbs, access to in-office neurofeedback clinics is just a matter of a short 15 minute drive. But what about those living in remote areas or small towns with no clinics available?

It seems that there is new hope in the form of at-home neurofeedback technology conducted live over the Internet. “It’s really quite simple”, say David A. Dubin, M.D., medical director for Sleep Recovery Centers, Inc. “After obtaining a written prescription from their primary care physician or psychiatrist, we ship a complete system package via UPS to anywhere in the US or Canada, and providing the new patient has home Wifi, the rest is easy”. The treatment uses a Skype HD video and audio feed for sensor hookup, direct communication between patient and technician and all follow up services. Tech support software allows for neurofeedback software monitoring and adjustments in near real-time. A Belgian study using this same neurofeedback delivery model showed significant improvements on sleep quality,  reduced sleep latency (time falling asleep) and increased short term memory during the day.
