At Home Tele-Neurofeedback Holds Promise for Rural Insomniacs.

For those living in larger cities and surrounding suburbs, access to in-office neurofeedback clinics is just a matter of a short 15 minute drive. But what about those living in remote areas or small towns with no clinics available?

It seems that there is new hope in the form of at-home neurofeedback technology conducted live over the Internet. “It’s really quite simple”, say David A. Dubin, M.D., medical director for Sleep Recovery Centers, Inc. “After obtaining a written prescription from their primary care physician or psychiatrist, we ship a complete system package via UPS to anywhere in the US or Canada, and providing the new patient has home Wifi, the rest is easy”. The treatment uses a Skype HD video and audio feed for sensor hookup, direct communication between patient and technician and all follow up services. Tech support software allows for neurofeedback software monitoring and adjustments in near real-time. A Belgian study using this same neurofeedback delivery model showed significant improvements on sleep quality,  reduced sleep latency (time falling asleep) and increased short term memory during the day.

Sleep-challenges Both ADD and ADHD are known disruptor’s of sleep architecture. Inattentive ADD is evidenced by under activity in a someone’s central nervous system (CNS). A person with inattentive ADD will always feel fatigued and unrested. They will also have poor organizational skills and will seem aloof or spaced-out most of the time. Their nighttime sleep never seems like enough and daytime naps are always needed.

ADHD, or hyperactive ADD is the CNS’s equivalent of the exact opposite. This overactive person will have great difficulty sitting still, will toss and turn during the night and will need caffeine to try to calm down in an attempt to stabilize (self medicate) their own CNS. Sleep for the ADHD person is usually very light and rarely restful.
